On July 26, 1908, the FBI was founded when U.S. Attorney General Charles Bonaparte ordered newly hired federal investigators to report to Chief Examiner Stanley W. Finch. Originally known as the Bureau of Investigation, it was later renamed the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1935.
