390. Saving the Royal Charter

In 1687, Connecticut colonists hid their Royal Charter within a giant white oak tree's hollow to thwart its confiscation by the English governor-general. Founded in 1636 by Thomas Hooker and Puritan settlers, the Connecticut Colony was one of New England’s earliest colonies. It grew from conflicts with the Dutch and Pequots, leading to the Pequot War (1637). In 1639, it adopted the Fundamental Orders, an early constitution. Connecticut gained a royal charter in 1662.
