This show will detail the biographies and interesting facts of the Papacy of Rome. It will start in the beginning, but will not go straight through. There will be many side tracks and detours along the way. We will investigate the backstreets of the Papacy where the tour normally doesn't go. Support this show

Episode 114: Biblical Literacy – The Greeks and Learning to Read Description: This episode is an edited version of the 2nd presentation I’ve done on literacy in the ancient world. These episodes are really fun and special for me because I can talk about many subjects I’m passionate about. The history of the Popes of Rome, Christianity, the bible, book production, literacy and the history of literacy. This is a very fun episode for me. It started off with an email from a listener who corrected me on a point I made about the history of the Christian liturgy. It turns out, the listener is a university academic, who has written papers on the foundations of the Christian liturgy. Well I just had to have Professor Andrew Messmer on the show. New information coming out from the academy is always really exciting, especially when it reassesses older theories and ideas. I hope to have Dr. Messmer back on the show again to discuss great new ideas that are coming out of the field. If there are aspects of ancient Christianity you would like to know more about, email me and I can try to put them into a future episode. Description: For this episode, we have a really fun collaboration with another papal history podcast, Pontifacts with Bry and Fry. The history of the popes of Rome is such a nearly infinite topic, which is great because the institution can be looked at in many different ways. I take more of a scatter shot approach. I pick and choose and follow threads in interesting directions. I like the politics, philosophy, theology and big picture of the Church and its leadership. Pontifacts takes the approach of providing biographies of each pope and evaluating them. I think that is really great and I am very glad to be able to collaborate with two people who are extremely passionate about a topic I am passionate about as well. This will definitely be the first of many collaborations with Bry and Fry. Episode 108 Fratelli Tutti Papal Encyclical Description: Papal encyclicals are a big deal and they don’t come out often. Encyclicals are the way the popes of Rome push out their big new teachings. Francis I has been pope a little over 7 years by this point in October 2020 and has just published his third Papal Encyclical. Francis’ encyclicals are whales too. They are huge documents stuffed with carefully worded language. We’ve brought in today a guest today to talk about this latest encyclical. Glenn Amorosia is an amateur historian of Papal Encyclicals. I will let Glenn introduce himself shortly, but I need to mention that he is an incredible source of knowledge for papal encyclicals. I really like to support people who dedicate their spare time to intellectual pursuits and mastering a subject area. With that, join Glenn and I as we dissect this latest papal encyclical, Fratelli Tutti.
