In today’s episode, we have a collaboration between the History of the Papacy and Organized Crime and Punishment Podcasts. We will discuss the complex relationship between the Roman Catholic Church and organized crime in southern Italy and the United States, focusing on the mafia groups such as La Cosa Nostra in Sicily, the Camorra in the Campania region, the 'Ndrangheta in Calabria and the 5 Mafia Families of New York City. Despite the Catholic Church's opposition to secret societies, the mafia organizations have shown a unique affinity for the church and its practices. While these criminal groups may be seen as at odds with Catholicism, they often identify as Catholic and maintain strong ties to the church.
